Penguins fall to Point Loma

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell to Point Loma 88-45 Saturday at the Conlan Center.
 
CJ Thomas and Jeremiah Grey led the Penguins (3-8, 2-2 PacWest) with 13 points each. Ziggy Satterthwaite led the Sea Lions (7-5, 1-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Thomas helped get Dominican off to a good start, hitting a step-back jumper from the elbow to put the Penguins ahead 6-2 in the first few minutes of the game. Grey later punched one home with his right hand after an offensive rebound to give Dominican an 8-6 advantage at the first media timeout.
 
Point Loma pounded the offensive glass early on, with Sterling Somers and Satterthwaite both snatching offensive rebounds and putting them back up and in, helping the Sea Lions to a 17-11 lead at the under-12 media timeout. Coming out of the break, Luke Lovelady put down a two-handed dunk on the break to extend Point Loma's lead to 20-11. The Penguins' later grew to 26-11 on a bucket from Preston Beverly to continue the Sea Lions' run.
 
A 3-pointer from freshman Marcus Loadholt near the eight-minute mark ended Point Loma's 13-0 run and brought Dominican back within 28-14. Grey later sliced through the lane and finished at the rim to keep the Penguins in it at 36-20. The Penguins were unable to muster much more offensive before the half, trailing 48-27 at the break.
 
Tanner Nelson put in a couple buckets early in the second half, helping the Sea Lions to a 55-29 lead a few minutes in. Preston Beverly stretched the lead to 61-33 with a pair of free throws five minutes in. Skyler White put in a triple to make it 68-33 a couple of minutes later. Dominican was unable to get much closer from there as Point Loma pulled away for the win.
 
The Penguins take the court again Wednesday, Jan. 3, at California Baptist for a 7 p.m. start. Live stats and video will be available online.
