Alyssa Ramos collected her fifth shutout in a 0-0 tie for Dominican women's soccer Tuesday against Cal Baptist at Kennelly Field.
Ramos finished the game with eight saves in 110 minutes of play. The Penguins (6-8-3, 4-6-2 PacWest) were outshot 21-6 overall, but a strong game by the backline limited the scoring opportunities of the Lancers (11-4-2, 9-1-2 PacWest).
Dominican was the first to apply offensive pressure and
Yasmine Angel put a shot on frame in the ninth minute, but Sara Escobedo was there to make the save for Cal Baptist. The Lancers tested Ramos nine minutes later, but Ramos made two saves in 30 seconds to keep her net clean. The defenses dominated the rest of the half not allowing either side another shot on goal.
Cal Baptist came out firing in the second half, but Ramos maintained a strong presence in the net making saves in the 46th and 47th minutes.
Rachel Stowell had a chance for the Penguins in the 69th minute as she flicked a ball towards the net, but Escobedo was able to track the ball through the crowd and make the save.
Mariah Meza then took a ball down the left side and fired a ball back towards the net in the 85th minute, but again was unable to beat the keeper. The Lancers' Hoku Afong had the final scoring opportunity of the half for either side in the 87th minute, but was unable to beat Ramos for the goal and the game headed to extra time.
Cal Baptist was the aggressor in the first overtime period with two shots and three corner kicks, but could not capitalize. Ramos was able to get her fingertips on a shot in the 97th minute and poke it just over the crossbar to foil the Lancers best chance at a goal in the period.
The second overtime was a close battle and the best opportunity could have been off a Lancer foul with 10 seconds remaining, but the Penguins were unable to set up in time to get the free kick off.
Dominican will wrap up its season Saturday against Concordia University Irvine at noon PDT at Kennelly Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
