Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball held off a late rally from Sonoma State for a 72-71 victory Saturday night in the final game of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at The Wolves' Den.
Senior Jeremiah Gray scored a game-high 19 points, 14 in the second half, and collected nine rebounds to lead the Penguins (1-4). Freshman Jordan Williams added 17 points, while senior Reverend Maduakor and junior Cedric Thomas each ended with 11 points.
Armani Nicolis scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed seven boards for the Seawolves (2-2), while teammates Brandon Tillis and Jackson Gion each ended the night with 12 points.
Dominican hit 50.8 percent of its shots from the floor and 33.3 percent from behind the arc, while Sonoma State finished at 48.3 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from 3-point range. In a game that saw 13 lead changes and three ties, the Penguins found the difference with a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points led by freshman Christian Futch's four offensive rebounds.
After Dominican led for the majority of the second half, Sonoma State chipped away and Gion hit a fall-away jumper with 1:24 remaining to give Sonoma State back the lead at 71-70. After each team failed to score on their next possessions, Maduakor gathered an offensive rebound and laid the ball home in traffic to give the Penguins a 72-71 lead with 31 seconds on the clock. The Seawolves held the ball for a final shot, but Gion's fall away from the baseline fell short and Cedric Thomas picked up the loose ball to give Dominican its first win of the season.
Dominican scored the first four points of the game, but hot shooting from behind the arc helped the Seawolves stay close as the lead changed several times in a back-and-forth first half. The Seawolves eventually created some separation with four quick points to take a 24-19 advantage with 5:49 remaining in the half.
Maduakor hit a jumper and Christopher Williams II nailed a 3-pointer to close the lead back to one. After a Cedric Thomas free throw tied the game, Maduakor drove the lane for two to take the 30-28 lead with 1:50 remaining and end an 8-0 run.
Gray hit a jumper to open the second half and J. Williams stole a ball and raced to the other end for a layup to give the Penguins a 37-33 lead out of the break. After Maduakor ended a 6-0 run with a jumper, the Seawolves answered with four quick points to close it to 62-59 with 7:48 remaining, but Sonoma State would not go away and remained within two possessions for the remainder of the game.
Dominican will head north to take on Chico State Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. PST at Acker Gymnasium. Live stats and video will be available online.
