Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball made a valiant comeback in the second half, but fell 83-72 Friday night to Minnesota State in the first game of the Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State at the Wolves' Den.
Senior Jeremiah Gray led all players in scoring with 26 points for the Penguins (0-4). Freshman Christian Futch recorded the first double-double of his Dominican career with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with a team-high four assists. Charlie Brown led the Mavericks (2-1) with 23 points and three rebounds.
The Penguins shot 42.6 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from behind the arc, but the Minnesota State finished with 53.7 percent shooting from the field to offset its 28.6 percentage from 3-point range.
Carter Asche and Chris Kendrix hit back-to-back shots behind the arc to spark a 10-2 run for the Mavericks to give them a 16-6 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Strong inside play powered another 10-2 run for Minnesota State that gave them a 28-10 lead, but freshman Jordan Williams was able to bury a 3-pointer to stop the run.
After two Maverick free throws, Gray hit a 3-pointer of his own and found Futch in the paint for two more to end the run and cut the lead to 30-18 with 5:17 remaining in the half. Brown powered a 6-2 charge to increase Minnesota State's lead to 42-25 at the half.
The Mavericks increased the lead to 19 early in the second half, but Dominican took charge with an 18-3 run. Christian Futch began to assert himself on the offensive end during the run, scoring eight points and the Penguins cut the deficit to 56-52 with 8:51 left in the game.
Gray kept the Penguins close with 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, but the Mavericks were able to answer with a 12-0 run to take a 15-point advantage into the final four minutes. The Penguins closed the gap back to single digits on a long 3-pointer by Gray in the final seconds of the game, but were unable to get any closer.
Dominican will take the court Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to take on Sonoma State in the final game of the Ron Logsdon Classic at the Wolves' Den. Live stats and video will be available online.
