Gray's double-double not enough for Penguins

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Senior Jeremiah Gray was on fire offensively, but turnovers proved costly as Dominican men's basketball fell 92-88 Saturday to San Francisco State at the Conlan Center.
 
Gray finished the game with a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds on 57.9 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. Gray was selected as part of the PacWest/CCAA Tip-Off Challenge All-tournament team after averaging 28.5 points and 7.5 rebounds.
 
Senior Reverend Maduakor added 15 points and six rebounds for the Penguins (0-2), while junior Cedric Thomas chipped in 13 points and freshman Jordan Williams finished with 11. Evan Zeller led the Gators (2-0) with 26 points, while teammate Chiefy Ugbaja contributed 21 points and seven rebounds.
 
Dominican shot 52.7 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from behind the arc, but committed 18 turnovers resulting in 27 points for San Francisco State.
 
Gray bookended layups by Thomas and Williams with two 3-pointers to lead a 10-2 run to give the Penguins an 11-7 advantage three minutes into the game. Dominican increased its lead to six after back-to-back layups by Gray, but the Gators responded with a 6-point run to tie the game with 5:57 left in the half.
 
Maduakor laid it in off the glass to start a Penguin 6-0 run and Gray ended the run with a 3-pointer to make it 32-26 with 3:44 on the clock. Brantley Bynum hit a shot behind the arc to rally the Gators to tie the game a minute later, but Dominican scored the final six points of the half to make it 38-32 heading to the locker rooms.
 
San Francisco State began a full-court press after halftime, forcing three turnovers to take a 41-40 lead on Jash Kahlon's jumper. The Gators pushed their lead to six at 50-44 with 14:09, but Gray cut the lead in half with another 3-pointer. San Francisco State used several small runs to increase the lead to as many as 12 with 7:18 remaining in the game.
 
Gray and Williams hit back-to-back shots behind the arc and Maduakor added a free throw to cut the lead back to five with six minutes remaining. Maduakor hit a 3-pointer and Futch added a layup moments later to cut the Gator lead to 74-72 with 3:40 remaining, but it was as close as the Penguins could get it as the teams traded buckets for the remainder of the game.
 
Dominican will hit the road next week beginning with Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. PST Tuesday at the Torodome. Live stats and video will be available online.
