SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team walked off both games of its PacWest doubleheader versus Holy Names on Friday, with a 1-0 win in eight innings and a 5-4 come-from-behind victory.
Both teams failed to score in the first seven innings. The Penguins (14-27/11-13 PacWest) left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded the leadoff batter at third in the seventh. Domincan took advantage in the bottom of the eighth after
Haley Cheek reached first on an error. With one out,
Karitza Reyes laid down a bunt single and
Alexis Chinchilla drew a five-pitch walk.
Keely Bowlan sent a fly ball to left field, which was deep enough to score Cheek from third.
Ashlyn Moriarity tossed five and two thirds innings of one-hit softball.
Angelina Lombardi (3-2) allowed two hits in two and one third innings of work to earn the win.
Gaby Katafias (5-6) went the distance in game two and allowed one earned run to lower her ERA to 2.78. HNU (12-28/5-15 PacWest) struck for a run in the second but Katafias limited the damage and left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the third,
Catlyn Cavender tripled home
Tori Johnson and
Tayler Munoz to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. The lead held until the fifth when HNU took advantage of two throwing errors and regained the lead, 3-2. The Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the seventh but Katafias again left the bases loaded. Reyes started a rally in the seventh with a single down the right field line, then Munoz drew a full-count walk.
Alyssa Lanza bunt singled to load the bases, then Cavender won it with a bases-clearing double.
Cavender went 3-for-4 on the day and drove in five. She was also pitched around twice for a pair of walks. She is now hitting .336/.417/.504. Johnson went 3-for-8 with a run. She is hitting .314. Lanza went 2-for-4 with a run and is now hitting .295.
