SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team was swept by No. 3 Humboldt State, 7-1 and 5-0, in a pair of non-conference games on Sunday.
Humboldt State (45-3-1) drew the first blow off of Dominican (12-29) starter
Ashlyn Moriarity (3-8). The Lumberjacks' Hannah Holland led the game with a single, then stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. The next two HSU batters drew walks but Moriarity countered with back-to-back strikeouts. Breonna Bejaron sent a sharp single back up the middle to give HSU the early 1-0 lead but Moriarity recorded another strikeout to leave the bases loaded. The Penguins answered in the bottom of the first.
Catlyn Cavender doubled to left center and two batters later,
Shannon Rodriguez drove her home with a single to right center.
HSU answered quickly though with another run in the second when Holland tripled home Cyndi Chavez, who hit by a pitch. The Lumberjacks plated an unearned run in the fourth off of reliever
Angelina Lombardi and a five-hit, three-run top of the fifth put the game out of reach. Kalyn Paque (3-0) went the distance for HSU.
In game two,
Gaby Katafias (5-7) shut down HSU for two innings but was scathed for a run in the third, however she left the bases loaded. Dominican had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame with the bases loaded and one out but failed to capitalize. The Lumberjacks extended the lead thanks to three Dominican errors in the fifth and plated four runs. Despite the loss, Katafias lowered her ERA to a team-best 2.64, which is 12th best in the PacWest.
Dominican will play its final road games of the season during a PacWest doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at Notre Dame de Namur. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. The Penguins then return for three home doubleheaders — Sunday, April 24 vs. NDNU; Monday, April 25 vs. Azusa Pacific; and Saturday, April 30 vs. Academy of Art.
