Penguins drop doubleheader to Holy Names

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team offense fell silent in a PacWest doubleheader versus Holy Names on Sunday in a pair of 4-1 and 1-0 losses.

Dominican (12-27/9-13 PacWest) failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities from the get-go. The Penguins loaded the bases with one out in the first inning but were unable to score. Three consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the second gave the Hawks (12-26/5-13 PacWest) a 3-0 advantage and would prove more than enough in the game. HNU added an unearned run in the third to make it 4-0. Karitza Reyes delivered an RBI single in the fourth that scored Haley Cheek from second base to cut the lead to 4-1. However, a fielder's choice and inning-ending double play cut the threat short. Another inning-ending double play in the sixth cut a rally short and Marissa Cordisco's single in the seventh went squandered. Ashlyn Moriarity (3-7) was charged with the loss. She allowed all four runs, one earned, in three innings of work. Gaby Katafias tossed three scoreless innings of one-hit ball.

Katafias (4-6) pitched well in game two also but was given no run support in a complete-game effort. Holy Names scored the game's lone run in the fourth. Geena Garabedian led off with a double to right center, stole third, and scored on Danielle Santoro's RBI single up the middle. Katafias limited the damage and stranded a pair of runners. In the fifth, a pair of HNU errors and a Cordisco bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. However, a foul out, force out at home, and strike out ended the chance to tie the game. Alexis Chinchilla doubled in the seventh and HNU elected to pitch around Catlyn Cavender with four consecutive balls. Kristina Carbajal (8-9) struck out Alyssa Lanza to secure the complete-game win.

The doubleheader was played at Penguin Field because the Hawks' home field of College of Marin was not playable due to the weather. HNU was the home team in both games but will return on Friday, April 15 at 12 and 2 p.m. as the visiting team. Live stats will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
