Penguins drop twin bill to No. 15 Dixie State

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a PacWest doubleheader to No. 15 Dixie State on Saturday, 11-1 in six innings and 6-1.

Errors continued to prove costly for the Penguins (10-19/8-10 PacWest). Josey Hartman started the third by reaching on an error, stole second, and advanced to third on Kristie Johnson's bunt single. The Red Storm (23-7/12-3 PacWest) used its speed to successfully steal second twice while also sending the runner from third on th throw for the steal at home, and added a third run on a sacrifice fly. Dixie State doubled its lead in the third and things got out of reach in the sixth with a five-run frame, capped by Jessica Gonzalez's two-out grand slam. Catlyn Cavender singled and scored in the bottom of the sixth but Dahlen Dennis lined out sharply to leave runners at first and second.

In game two, another Dominican error led to a Red Storm run in the second and an early 1-0 deficit. The Penguins countered in the bottom half of the inning with Alexis Chinchilla's RBI single that scored pinch runner Sarah McKenzie. Dixie State took the lead for good in the fourth. A pair of Dominican errors kept the door open and the Red Storm capitalized with a five-run inning.

As part of the NFCA's Strikeout Cancer initiative, Dominican wore lavender ribbons and shoelaces to help raise awareness for the battle against all cancers. Cancer survivors Kathy Lombardi and Skyler Moon '15 tossed out ceremonial first pitches to Angelina Lombardi and Sarah McKenzie.

Dominican has the week off until heading to Brisbane, California on Saturday, March 26. The Penguins will battle PacWest rival Academy of Art at 12 and 2 p.m.
