BRISBANE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team split a PacWest doubleheader with Academy of Art on Saturday. The Penguins won 4-2 in game one and fell 11-6 in game two.
The Penguins (11-20/9-11 PacWest) used four RBI singles up the middle to win the game one victory. In the first and the third innings,
Katelyn Harden delivered RBI singles up the middle that plated
Tori Johnson. Those two runs sandwiched
Alyssa Lanza's RBI single up the middle in the second. In the fifth, Lanza scored on Harden's third RBI single up the middle to make it 4-2. ART U (13-16-1/9-7 PacWest) scored in the second on Elise Oldham's leadoff homer and a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the third inning.
Ashlyn Moriarity (3-4) allowed two hits in five innings of work to earn the win.
Gaby Katafias entered in the sixth and loaded the bases but recorded back-to-back outs to end the threat, then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to record the save. True Park went five and a third innings and took the loss for the Urban Knights.
Dominican grabbed the lead in game two thanks to
Dahlen Dennis' RBI single in the first inning but after a seven-minute delay in the bottom half of the inning, the Urban Knights took the lead on a two-run homer by Oldham. An eight-run inning in the third blew the game open for ART U, though Dominican rallied for four runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of Urban Knight errors. ART U added another run in the fourth. Harden (2-6) took the loss in game two. Park (3-1) entered in relief in game two to earn the win after she took the loss earlier.
The Penguins will now head to the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State for six games from Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 3.
