Softball drops pair to No. 12 CBU

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a PacWest doubleheader to No. 12 California Baptist on Wednesday, 9-0 in six innings and 5-1.

The Penguins (10-17/8-8 PacWest), who returned on Sunday from a 7-3 roadtrip in Hawaii, struggled in their first appearance at home since the end of February. Dominican made five errors on the day, which led to five unearned runs.

With two outs in the first, CBU (20-6/3-3 PacWest) took advantage of indecision on the part of the Dominican infield to wave home Jacque Lopez all the way from second base on a fielder's choice for the early 1-0 lead. Dominican starter Kelsey Goodner (1-6) got back-to-back strikeouts to start the second but four hits, two walks, and an error resulted in four runs before Goodner recorded another strikeout to end the inning. CBU added a run on a sacrifice fly and another Penguins error in the third extended the deficit to 7-0. Soraya Shahbazian's two-out homer in the sixth made it 9-0. Ashley Coleman (7-2) tossed a complete game for the Lancers and only allowed one hit, a Shannon Rodriguez leadoff single in the second.

In game two, a Dominican error began the second inning and the Lancers capitalized yet again for a 2-0 lead. Keely Bowlan drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to trim the lead to 2-1 but the Penguins left the bases loaded after Alyssa Lanza hit into a fielder's choice and Tori Johnson lined out. CBU got the run back in the third on another unearned run and added a pair in the sixth inning. Ashlyn Moriarity (2-3) threw five innings and took the loss in game two while Kayla Hatch (8-2) went six innings and earned the win for the Lancers.

Dominican hosts the PacWest's other nationally-ranked team, No. 19 Dixie State, on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. That is Strike Out Cancer Day, an effort by the NFCA to raise awareness and funds to combat cancer. The Penguins will be wearing lavender highlights, which represents all cancers. Live stats will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live with live audio provided by the student broadcasters of Penguin Radio at radio.dominican.edu.
