Penguins drop doubleheader to Central Washington

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader, 4-0 and 9-2, to Central Washington on Saturday at Penguin Field.

Dominican (1-7) starter Gaby Katafias (1-1) worked out of jam early. She stranded a pair in the first and loaded the bases with no outs in the second but recorded two strikeouts and a grounder to keep the game scoreless. CWU (8-1) broke through in the third inning with a two-out rally that resulted in a pair of runs and a 2-0 lead for the Wildcats. CWU added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to double the lead to 4-0. Dominican's biggest threat came in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Penguins left runners on the corners. Kiana Wood (5-0) earned the win for CWU.

In game two, CWU scored first on an RBI double in the third inning but the Penguins tied it in the bottom half of the inning on an unearned run. Central Washington chased starter Kelsey Goodner (0-2) with a three-run fourth inning. Dominican threatened in the bottom of the fourth and got a run back on Haley Cheek's RBI single up the middle but again left runners at the corners. Dominican stranded another pair in the bottom of the fifth. CWU put things well out of reach with a four-run sixth and tacked on one more run in the seventh. Brielle Copodonna (3-1) earned the win in game two for the Wildcats.

Dominican hosts No. 19 Sonoma State on Wednesday in non-conference action. First pitch is slated for 12 and 2 p.m. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
