SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team ran its win streak to five matches with a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-10, 25-20) victory over rival Notre Dame de Namur.
Aimee Steinwand, coming off of a week in which she was named
PacWest Player of the Week and nominated for HERO of the Week, led all players with 20 kills. She added 19 digs for her 13th double-double of the season and tallied a season-high four service aces.
Madeline Powelson added her eighth double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, and had four service aces of her own. Dominican had its strongest night attacking in nearly a month and hit .325 or over in the three frames that the Penguins won, including .444 in set three.
With set one tied 8-8, the Penguins (12-6/8-2 PacWest) went on a 7-0 run and never relinquished the lead. Dominican struggled in set two and hit just .053 to head into intermission tied at 1-1. The Penguins came out swinging in set three and led 10-4 to force an NDNU (4-14/2-8 PacWest) timeout. That didn't slow Dominican though and the Penguins grew the lead to 16-6, which forced the Argonatus to call timeout again. The Penguins closed the set out on a 5-0 run and carried the momentum into set four, where they jumped out to a 13-5 lead. The Argonauts would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Dominican limited NDNU to .114 hitting, including -.067 in a third set that limited the Argonauts to a season-low 10 points. The Penguins are second in the PacWest in opponent hitting percentage at .172.
Kate Even added 10 kills.
Brittany Latigue had seven kills and was involved in four of Dominican's six blocks.
Hannah Smith dished out 46 assists. Libero
Amanda Lee had a match-high 20 digs. Freshman
Zoe Burgess recorded double-digit digs for the third time this season with 11. As a team, the Penguins lead the PacWest with 19.1 digs per set.
Bianca Alvarez led NDNU with 13 kills and 15 digs. Dominique Tarrant added 12 kills and 14 digs.
Dominican is tied with California Baptist for the most wins in the PacWest with eight, and is in third place behind CBU (8-1) and Dixie State (7-0), both of which received votes in the latest
AVCA coaches national rankings. The Penguins will now embark on a three-match trip to Hawaii, where the Penguins will face Chaminade (Oct. 19), Hawai'i Pacific (Oct. 20), and Hawai'i Hilo (Oct. 22).
