HONOLULU — The Dominican University of California kicked off its trip to Hawaii with a 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 13-25, 25-12, 15-8) victory at Chaminade to extend the Penguins' win streak to six.
Dominican (13-6/9-2 PacWest) received
Aimee Steinwand's 14th double-double of the season as the junior tallied 11 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore
Brittany Latigue added 11 kills and led all players with six blocks. Senior
Madeline Powelson added seven kills and matched a season-high 21 digs. Senior libero
Amanda Lee led all players with 29 digs.
After winning the first set, the Penguins dropped the next two sets. Dominican responded by holding Chaminade (9-10/3-7 PacWest) to .043 hitting in the final two sets. After a forgettable third set, the Penguins doubled up the Silverswords 14-7 and closed the set out on a 7-3 run. In set five, a pair of CUH attack errors gave Dominican a 5-3 lead and the Silverswords would never get any closer.
The Silverswords were led by 12 kills from Emma Tecklenburg. Natashya Enos had a team-high 13 digs and was one of four CUH players in double digits.
The Penguins will look to match their longest win streak in the Division II era on Thursday, Oct. 20 when they head to Hawai'i Pacific. Dominican topped the Sharks 3-1 at home but the Sharks have played well since and are 7-2 in PacWest play.
