Penguins shutout in final non-conference match

Sylvanna Islsas made four saves in her first college start.
Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. — The final tuneup before PacWest begins didn't go as planned for the Dominican University of California women's soccer team, which was shutout 3-0 at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon.

As has been the case early on, the Penguins (0-6-0) were shutout for the third time this season, despite having plenty of scoring opportunities. Dominican attempted 12 shots, the same as the Otters (3-2-0), and placed four on goal.

True freshman Sylvanna Islas became the third player to make the start at goal this season for Dominican. She made four saves and allowed all three goals. The Penguins held off the Otters attack until the 36th minute. Hannah Cobb played a long through ball to Ashlee Cortez, who made the shot from the close right wing.

Another long through ball doubled the Otters' lead in the 53rd minute off the foot of Shoshana Wangerin. After taking posession from the previous goal, Dominican junior Lauren Gollnick had a chance to negate Wangerin's goal but CSUMB keeper Samantha Webb was there to stop Gollnick's shot from the top of the circle.

Regan Porteous' header from the close right wing in the 72nd minute of the season put the match out of reach. Freshman Mariah Meza had an opportunity to get Dominican on the baord in the 84th minute but both of her shots from within the circle were blocked.

The Penguins head into PacWest action beginning with a split doubleheader on Thursday, Sept. 25 vs. Chaminade. The men will play early at 12 p.m. and the women will play later at 4:30 p.m. Both teams face BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, Sept. 27 with the men at 12 p.m. and the women at their regular 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Saturday is also Chilly's Cove, where parents, alumni, and Penguin Club members are invited for free food and refreshments and raffle prizes while watching the game from the north end of John F. Allen Athletics Complex overlooking Kennelly Field. Chilly's cove will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
