Early deficit costs Penguins yet again

Lauren Gollnick had two of Dominican's shots on goal on Friday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team fell behind in the fifth minute and never recovered in Friday's 2-0 non-conference loss against Chico State.

The Penguins (0-5-0) saw Katie Brow's cross to Megan Tabler deflect off of a Dominican defender and into the back of the net. Chico State (3-1-1) scored again in the 30th minute when Nicole Roberts crossed a ball from the right side to Tabler, who was at the left of the goal mouth for her second goal of the day. Dominican escaped further trouble in the 52nd minute when Lindsey Dias' penalty kick ricocheted off the crossbar and Dominican was able to clear the ball.

Dominican challenged Chico State with six shots, four on goal, but Biranna Furner was there to stop all four looks. Lauren Gollnick had a pair of shots on goal while Mckenna Kimball and Peyton Jones had the other two.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Lentz allowed both goals and made two saves. She gave way to true freshman Sylvanna Islas, who made five saves in 54 minutes of action.

Dominican heads to Cal State Monterey Bay for one more non-conference tuneup on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 25 the Dominican women host Chaminade at 4:30 p.m. in a PacWest doubleheader. On Saturday, Sept. 27, Dominican hosts BYU-Hawaii in another doubleheader with the women at 2:30 p.m. That day Dominican will be hosting its annual Chilly's Cove event. Alumni, Penguin Club members, and parents are invited for a tailgate at the north end overlooking Kennelly Field for free food and refreshments and raffle prizes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
