Big second quarter propels Penguins over Coker College

Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. — The No. 13 Dominican University of California men's lacrosse team exploded with an 8-0 outburst in the second quarter on Thursday and got back on track in a big way with an 18-9 victory at Coker College.

The Cobras (3-4) took an early 2-0 lead before Trevor Garner got the Penguins (3-1) on the board with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 with 10:55 to go in the first. Connor Pryor connected with Kevin Powers a minute later to tie the game, and Powers assisted Cody Bernstein to give Dominican its first lead of the day at the seven-minute mark.

Shane Wilson tied it up for the Cobras at the two-minute mark in the first quarter but the Dominican defense wouldn't allow another goal for the next 24 minutes of action. The Penguins fired off the next nine goals and held the Cobras scoreless in the second quarter.

After allowing three of the four shots that came his way in the first quarter, Dominican goalie Sean Donohue clamped down and made five saves in the second quarter to earn his third win of the season. Reis Stanley took over netminding duties in the second half and made nine saves and allowed six goals in his first appearance of the season.

Dominican was dominant all over the field, snatching up 10 more groundballs (36-26). Dylan Acevedo continued his strong face-off work, winning 12 of his 18 face-offs.

Junior attackman Kevin Powers led the Penguins for the second straight game. He had four goals on eight shots and a pair of assists.

Five Dominican players scored two goals apiece: Cody Bernstein, Jake Bernstein, Grant Clifford, Jake Fritz, and Garner. Cody Bernstein also had a pair of assists. Dalton Copeland added a goal and two assists. Jack Beall and Pryor each had one goal and one assist and Kiel Crowley-Galvin rounded out the Penguins to score with a goal.

Mike Martiello led the Cobras with four goals on 11 shots.

The Penguins wrap up the four-game road trip on Sunday, March 16 at Lindenwood University. The two teams last met in 2012, when Lindendwood was still a member of the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The Penguins won both contests that season, 12-5 and 15-8. Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
