Penguins win fifth straight behind Haysbert

Connor Haysbert slams down two of his 22 points in Wednesday's victory over Holy Names.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Connor Haysbert took over in the second half and the Dominican University of California men's basketball team turned a one-point halftime lead into a 76-65 victory over Holy Names University on Wednesday night in the Conlan Center.

Haysbert had a consistent first half with nine points and three rebounds but neither team did much to distinguish itself and create a lead as neither team held greater than a six-point lead.

After Harold Perry, Jr. gave the Hawks (5-16/4-10 PacWest) the lead to begin the second half, the Penguins (16-7/10-5) wasted no time taking control of the game. Three pointers from Dominique Taplin and Myles Carrillo, and a bucket from Haysbert had the Penguins up seven three minutes into the second half and the lead was at a dozen by the 12-minute mark. The lead grew to as large as 16 on a steady diet of three-pointers and points in the paint.

Dominican scored 40 points in the paint, with Haysbert leading all players with 22 points. The senior center finished with his third double-double of the season after pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. The Penguins also outrebounded the Hawks to the tune of 35-25.

Carrillo, who was 4-of-8 (.500) from deep, had half of the Penguins' long-distance makes. He finished with 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Dominique Taplin added 12 points in the victory, Josh Armstrong scored seven, and three more had five points apiece.

The Penguins did it all without starter Matt Hayes, who missed the contest with flu-like symptoms, and Devin Golston, who sat out the final 14 minutes due to injury.

Joshua Crum led the Hawks with 17 points. Perry finished with 15 points.

Dominican will look to extend its winning streak to six games next Thursday, Feb. 13 vs. rival Notre Dame de Namur (6-13/5-8 PacWest). That is also Academic Night. Dominican President Mary Marcy will be in attendance as the program's four PacWest Academic Achievement Award banners are presented at halftime. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. with live coverage available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
