Men's basketball tops ART U for twentieth win of season

Dominican's three seniors and cheerleader Julia Hand were honored on Senior Night.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten came off the bench to lift the Dominican University of California men's basketball team to its ninth consecutive victory and twentieth victory of the season, an 83-69 victory over Academy of Art University.

The 20th victory marks the first time the Penguins (20-7/13-5 PacWest) have done so in the NCAA Division II era and since the 2004-05 season when the Penguins ran away with the California Pacific West Conference Championship and advanced to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Sweet 16.

Schwartz-Edmisten poured in a season-high 21 points in Monday night's Pacific West Conference contest, senior Myles Carrillo scored 18 points on his Senior Night, and Dominique Taplin added 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Dominican missed its first seven field goal attempts and didn't find a rhythm for the first quarter of play. A Matt Hayes three-pointer finally gave the Penguins the lead for good, 19-17, with 8:33 to go in the half. A seven-point lead in the second half quickly grew to a 72-54 Penguins advantage with a 13-2 run and Dominican never led by less than a dozen the rest of the way.

The Penguins made half of their 24 three-pointers, which helped offset their slow start and 44.1 percent (26-of-59) shooting from the field. The Penguins also went 19-of-23 (82.6 percent) from the free-throw line.

Foul trouble kept Connor Haysbert from making a larger impact, though the senior center still managed eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in his Senior Night. Hayes added six and Jonny Bates added five points to go with seven rebounds.

Alex Carmon and Alexis Moore each scored 20 points for ART U (6-20/4-15 PacWest).

Senior Devin Golston, who was injured in a Feb. 5 victory over Holy Names, and cheerleader Julia Hand were also honored before the game.

Dominican controls its own destiny. A victory on Saturday, March 1 at Notre Dame de Namur would secure the No. 2 seed for the Penguins when they head to the PacWest Championships March 6-8 in San Diego. That would also mean a first-round bye. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
