Men's basketball leads wire-to-wire in seventh straight win

Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. — Dominican University of California men's basketball Head Coach Booker T. Harris used just the sixth different lineup this season but the result was the team's seventh consecutive victory. Freshman Josh Armstrong was the newest player in the starting lineup as the Penguins led wire-to-wire in Saturday's 92-73 Pacific West Conference victory at Holy Names.

Dominique Taplin wasted no time, draining back-to-back three pointers on Dominican's first two possessions. Taplin kept at it with a defensive rebound, followed by an offensive board, then fed Matt Hayes for a three ball of his own. That gave the Penguins (18-7/12-5 PacWest) a 9-0 lead less than two minutes into the game and there was little doubt as the lead grew to as large as 21 and no less than seven the rest of the night.

The Hawks (5-19/4-12 PacWest) cut the lead to eight in the second half but an 8-2 Dominican run quickly extended the lead back to 15. The Penguins dominated the paint, outscoring the Hawks 40-20, led by Connor Haysbert's 25 points and eight rebounds. The senior center couldn't be stopped and

Taplin finished his night 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) and with 18 points to go with four rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Myles Carrillo was perfect in all four of this free throw attempts and scored 20 points. Carrillo also had four rebounds and two assists.

Matt Hayes chipped in 12 points with three three-pointers on 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) shooting. He had three rebounds and four assists.

Armstrong did admirable his first collegiate start, recording seven points and dishing out seven assists in 33 minutes.

Carl Dorn scored 25 points for the Hawks, who also had four players in double digits.

Dominican raised its scoring average to 79.7 with its largest output since scoring 97 points in an upset win at then-No. 25 Dixie State on Feb. 1.
