Box Score SAINT GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team entered Saturday's contest with Dixie State University with the tall task of playing at the Burns Arena, where the No. 20 nationally-ranked Red Storm hadn't lost a game this season. The Penguins rose to the occasion, lighting it up from behind the three-point line while
Devin Golston and Johnny Bates both turned in career-highs to topple the Red Storm 97-88 in Pacific West Conference play.
The Penguins (15-7/9-5 PacWest) shot 56.1 percent (32-for-57) for the game but even more impressive was their long-range shooting, where Dominican shot a season-best 54.5 percent (12-for-22).
Golston set the tone early, drawing a foul on a second-chance opportunity in the opening possession. He knocked down both free throws but the lead would change hands continuously in the first half, with neither team holding larger than a six-point lead.
The Penguins led 44-40 at intermission and came out of the locker room firing. Golston nailed a jumper and
Dominique Taplin followed with a fast break layup to double the lead to eight. A
Matt Hayes three-pointer three minutes later extended the Dominican lead to 14, the game's largest difference.
Dixie State (15-4/9-4 PacWest) responded in turn, narrowing the deficit to a single point with a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes. Then, at the 8:05 minute mark, the Red Storm took the momentum by tying the game at 68-68 on a Louis Garrett three-point play.
Dominican responded with what was working and Taplin found Hayes for the three-pointer to put the Penguins back up for good. Dixie State cut the lead back to a pair but another strong showing at the free throw line helped the Penguins secure the upset. From that point, Dominican took full advantage of 11 trips to the charity stripe and shot 84 percent (21-for-25) for the game.
Golston's 25 points and seven rebounds led all players. Hayes (16 points) led the three-point party with four while
Myles Carrillo (20 points) and Bates (13 points) each had three apiece. Taplin made it five Penguins in double digits with 11 points. Carrillo tallied a game-high seven assists.
Dalton Groskreutz was the only Dixie State starter in double digits with 20 points, though four members of the Red Storm finished with 10 or more points.
Coupled with a BYU-Hawaii loss, the win moved the Penguins into fourth place in the standings, as well as the would-be fourth seed of the PacWest Championships. It also creates a bottleneck in the standings with Dominican, Dixie State, and Chaminade all posting nine conference wins to this point.
Winners of their last four, the Penguins return home to the Conlan Center on Wednesday, Feb. 5. They'll see Holy Names University (5-15/4-8) for the first of two times this season. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. with live coverage available at
