Women's soccer hampered by wet weather versus Dixie State

Kaitlynn Baptista and the Dominican women's soccer team outshot Dixie State but came out on the short side of things, 2-0, on Saturday morning.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Whether they asked for it or not, the Dominican University of California women's soccer team earned the distinction of playing the first game on Kennelly Field in rain-soaked conditions. Unfortunately the rain wasn't kind to the Penguins, who dropped a 2-0 Pacific West Conference match to visiting Dixie State on Saturday morning.

In the 30th minute, a Dixie State (2-3-1/2-1-0) shot by Megan Marchbanks was saved by Megan Herring. However, the slick ball squirted out of the Dominican keeper's hands. Kimberly Thurman was there and connected with Jennifer Mason for the game's first goal.

Thirty minutes later, the Red Storm doubled its lead. Thurman again made things happen, this time with a ball from the right side crossed to Kaisa Goodman, who put it in the left corner to make it 2-0.

Dominican (2-3-2/0-1-1) outshot Dixie State 11-9 and had several close opportunities. A corner kick in the 46th minute by Stephanie Pawek found Megan Hanson, whose header went just left of the goal. Less than a minute later, a left-footed shot by skimmed just wide right and five minutes later an attempt by Mckenna Kimball went wide. In the 80th minute, Kaila Wakida had a good look stopped by Red Storm keeper Stacie Gubler.

Dominican was called offsides in the seventh minute, which erased a potential goal, and again in the 80th minute. Dixie State had a third goal called back on offsides just minutes before that in the 76th minute.

The Penguins head to Fresno Pacific University for another PacWest match on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:00 p.m.
