Penguins match biggest offensive outing ever

Brock Beall had a fourth of the Penguins' 20 goals on Thursday.
Box Score BOONE, N.C. — The Dominican University of California men's team had to play in what may have been the coldest conditions ever  for the program — 20 degrees with a stiff breeze and windchill that made it feel even colder. That didn't stop the Penguins from responding with  the most lopsided win in program history, a 20-1 victory over Lees-McRae College on Thursday.

Dominican (2-2), who was handed a tough 10-9 overtime loss to preseason ranked Mars Hill College on Tuesday, posted its biggest offensive display since a 20-6 victory over Southwestern University during the 2010 season.

Blake Crossman did the dirty work in the snow for the Penguins and took every one of the team's 24 faceoffs, winning over two thirds of them with 17.

The Penguins built an early 5-0 lead and extended it to 8-1 by halftime. Nine Dominican players scored in the contest. Junior Brock Beall exploded for a career-high five goals on eight shots. Sophomore Jake Fritz led the charge with a hat trick and an assist. Junior Dalton Copeland had another strong showing with two goals and three assists while sophomore Kevin Powers scored twice and tallied two assists. Freshman Grant Clifford, senior co-captain Cam Evangelho each added a pair of goals and an assist. Sophomore Ian Nickel also added a pair of goals in the victory. Freshman Cody Bernstein scored once and dished out a pair of assists. Freshman Trevor Garner rounded out the offensive explosion with the first goal of the game.

The Penguins' trio of goalies — Sean Donohue, Ryan Williams, and Nick Dellipizzi — all saw the field and after allowing a goal with just over a minute in the first half, shutout the    Bobcats (0-7) the rest of the contest.

“We got to play everybody today, it made for lots of good experience for guys,” said Head Coach Ned Webster. “We rode very hard and got after groundballs in undesirable conditions.”

The Penguins will have to bring the same intensity again in their final two games of the road trip. Dominican heads to No. 10 Pfeiffer University on Saturday, March 9 and concludes the road trip against the No. 1 NCAA Division II team in the nation, Mercyhurst University, on Tuesday, March 12.
