Penguins limit own turnovers, turn CBU turnovers into win

Derek Ober sparked the Penguins in Monday's win at CBU.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball fended off a late run by California Baptist University and earned another tough Pacific West Conference road win, 68-65, on Monday night at Van Dyne Gym.

The Penguins (12-8/8-4) got off to another slow start and trailed by as much as eight early. An Anthony Cosentino jumper put the Lancers (12-7/6-5) back up four with just over four minutes left before the half but the Penguins shut out the home team the rest of the half and scored six straight points, including a Jammall Clark buzzer beater, to take a 35-33 halftime lead.

Derek Ober sparked the Penguins in the second half and helped Dominican build a nine-point lead with eight points during a 10-2 run that saw the Penguins leading 55-46. However, CBU made things interesting down the stretch. Four straight points from Kyle Wong tied the game at 60-60 with 1:59 to go. Jacob Noisat put Dominican back up four with a pair of free throws, then after the Penguins allowed a Luke Evans layup, Clark slammed home a dunk to keep the lead at four. Cosentino answered with a three-pointer to pull within one but free throws from Myles Carrillo kept Dominican in front and CBU's last-ditch effort came up short.

“Our ball pressure really influenced the outcome tonight,” said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. “We came up short on the glass [37 to 33] but we made opportunities elsewhere and took advantage of them when we had to.”

That ball pressure forced 21 turnovers and converted CBU's miscues into 20 points at the offensive end. The Penguins matched a season-low by committing just nine turnovers themselves.

Dominican went a season-low .143 (2-of-14) from three-point land but made up for it at the free throw line, where the Penguins went a perfect 14-of-14.

Evans led the Lancers with 15 points. Wong added 14, and Cosentino added 13 points in the loss.

Clark led the Penguins with 13 points. Ober, who went 5-of-10 from the field, and Devin Golston had 12 points apiece. Noisat had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Dominican now heads to Azusa Pacific University, where they'll wrap up the three-game road trip through Southern California against the Cougars. Tipoff is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
