Penguins improve home record to 8-3, best since 2007-08 season

Dominique Taplin and the Penguins rose to 9-3 at home with Saturday's win at HNU.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Devin Golston tallied 11 of his team-high 15 points in the first half when Dominican University of California shot 74.1 percent and built a 19-point lead and Jammall Clark added 14 points  as the Penguins defeated Holy Names University 82-67 Saturday night before the largest crowd of the season in Conlan Center.

The win, the fifth in the last seven games for Dominican (15-10/11-6), improved the Penguins' home record this season to 8-3, the most home victories by Dominican men's team since it went 10-4 in the Conlan Center during the 2007-08 season.

“We got another home victory and we need one more at home [Senior Night vs. Academy of Art University this coming Saturday] so we can go into the conference tournament with momentum,” said Head Coach Booker T. Harris, whose team is battling BYU-Hawaii for the No. 4 seed in the inaugural Pacific West Conference Tournament at Azusa Pacific University on March 7-9.

Jacob Noisat had 10 points as did Myles Carrillo, who netted two three-point shots against the Hawks (5-20/2-14). Dominican is 6-0 this season games when Carrillo does that.

Dominican, which entered the contest last in the Pacific West Conference in assists with 10.4 per game, had 11 at halftime and wound up tying their season-high with 17. Ricky Wofford had six of those dishes, tying his career-high.

“Ball movement was definitely a factor tonight because they [Hawks] were in a zone,” said Golston, who had two assists. “To beat the zone we had to move the ball around quite a bit and that was a big contribution to the game.”

Golston also topped the Penguins with a game-best eight rebounds as Dominican, which had 28 defensive rebounds to 11 for Holy Names, boosted its record to 14-2 this season when it has outrebounded its opponent. Golston had six rebounds and didn't miss a shot in the first half when the Penguins made four of their first five shots from 3-point range. Ten of 11 Dominican players who played in the first half scored and 12 Penguins reached the scoring column in the contest.

The host team scored the game's first nine points and never trailed. Three times the Penguins upped their lead to 19 points – on a Noisat dunk off a Golston pass, on a Noisat three-point play off a Clark pass, and on a 3-point shot by freshman Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten for a 48-29 advantage with 2:06 remaining before halftime.

Dominican continued to excel at the free throw line. Led by Karl Reyes, who went 6-for-6 at the line, the Penguins sank 18 of 21 foul shots, including four by Dominique Taplin who has made 43 of his last 46 free throws. He and freshman Matt Hayes both scored eight points against Holy Names.

The Penguins conclude their regular-season schedule next Saturday against Academy of Art on Senior Night in the Conlan Center.  Game time is 7:30 p.m. but Dominican seniors Clark, Wofford, Noisat, Derek Ober, and Jarred Pengel will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
