Myles Carrillo may come to mind.
On Thursday night, the Penguins (7-2/1-0) rallied from down seven with a minute to go to force overtime, then won it at the buzzer on a fadeaway jumper by the senior point guard to win it, 91-89 over Azusa Pacific University (3-3/0-1) in the Pacific West Conference season opener.
Carrillo, who already this season has a game-winner versus Sonoma State and forced overtime with a shot over Cal State East Bay, was sent to the free throw line with the game on the line with 17 seconds to go in regulation. After trailing 78-72 with 59 seconds to go, the Penguins trimmed the lead to two twice. Down 79-77 with 17 seconds to go, Carrillo stepped to the line and knocked down both free throws. Meanwhile Dominican held the Cougars scoreless over the final 33 seconds of regulation.
In overtime, Troy Leaf opened the frame with a three-pointer. After a
Devin Golston free throw, a pair of Kevin Stafford freebies extended the Azusa Pacific lead to four.
Dominique Taplin knocked down one of his free throws, then
Matt Hayes nailed a three-pointer with a hand in his face to tie the ballgame at 84-84. On the same play,
Connor Haysbert was fouled on the potential rebound, which sent the big man to the line. Haysbert knocked down one of his shots to put Dominican ahead 85-84 with 2:48 to go. The Penguins led by four on a Golston bucket two trips later but the Cougars tied it on Jared Zoller's free throws, the result of an offensive rebound. The Penguins put the ball in the hands of Carrillo, who barely got his shot off to send Dominican home victorious.
Golston poured in 18 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in 42 minutes of action to help the Penguins shoot 29-of-57 (.509) from the field. Haysbert matched a season-high with 17 points and grabbed seven boards. Hayes poured in 16 points with four of his five field goals from three-point range. Taplin added 14 and dished out a team-high five assists.
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten came off the bench to add 14 points and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Carrillo was the only starter who didn't reach double digits but finished with nine, including the four clutch points.
Dominican trailed 40-37 at halftime and by as much as eight after a Zoller three-pointer made it 76-68 with 2:31 to go. Zoller was one of five Cougars to reach double digits with 12 points. Leaf's 23 points led all players.
