Taplin powers road victory over ART U

Dominique Taplin slams down two of his game-high 20 points on Saturday.
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — Dominique Taplin poured in 20 points and the Dominican University of California men's basketball team held on for a 76-70 win over Academy of Art University in Pacific West Conference play at Kezar Pavilion late Saturday night.

Taplin had six points at intermission but came alive in the second half, notably battling in the paint and with a fast break slam dunk. He went 9-of-15 on the night to go with five boards, four assists, and four steals.

The Penguins (9-2/3-0) went 15-of-28 (.536) and drained six three-pointers to build a 43-29 first-half lead. After ART U (2-6/1-2) scored on the first possession, Dominican scored the next 10 points. From there, the Penguins never led by fewer than five points in the half and led by as much as 16.

Dominican shot even better in the second half (14-of-23, .609) but also allowed ART U to get back into the game on 14-of-27 (.519) shooting. Things got dicey when ART U whittled the lead to three points at the three-minute mark. A free throw from Myles Carrillo and a pair of Devin Golston free throws held off the resurgence and the Dominican defense didn't allow a point over the final 1:28.

Golston added 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Connor Haysbert added 10 points. Carrillo, Matt Hayes, and Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten all scored seven points apiece. Karl Ohrner added six points on a pair of first-half three pointers and Jonny Bates added a three pointer.

The Urban Knights were led by Alexis Moore's 18 points, which included a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Dominican will head to California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif. for another PacWest contest on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. for the Lancers, who improved to a school-best 9-0 with Saturday's win over Fresno Pacific University.
