Men's basketball makes history, off to program-best 5-0 start

Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten scored a season-high 17 points as the Penguins made program history on Thursday night.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It was another team effort on Thursday night at the Conlan Center as five players reached double digits for the Dominican University of California men's basketball team, which notched its fifth consecutive victory, a 95-59 win over Pacifica College.

The victory marks the best-ever start for the program, surpassing the 4-0 start by the 2002-03 Penguins, which went on to earn the program's first of four consecutive California Pacific Conference titles and NAIA Division II tournament appearances.

All 10 Penguins to enter the game scored. with five of those players reaching the double-digit mark. Sophomore Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten came off the bench to lead the Penguins (5-0) with 17 points in just 19 minutes on 6-of-8 shooting. Devin Golston recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Myles Carrillo scored 14 points. Dominique Taplin poured in 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, as did Karl Ohrner, who got the starting nod with senior center Connor Haysbert sidelined with a concussion.

The Penguins led wire-to-wire and built a healthy lead in the first half, taking a 32-15 lead on a Taplin layup. Fouls kept Pacifica (0-3) in the game though and the lead shrunk to nine, 43-34, at halftime.

Head Coach Booker T. Harris addressed his players at halftime and they responded with a 15-point run fueled by Golston, Taplin, Schwartz-Edmisten, and Carrillo to extend the lead to 58-34. It was smooth sailing from there as the Penguins stretched the final deficit to 36.

Dominican limited its turnovers, making just four, while scoring 24 off of the 13 committed by Pacifica. The Penguins distributed the ball well and dished out 18 assists, led by five from Taplin and four from Carrillo. That led to 35-of-63 shooting (.556) for the Penguins, who limited the Gladiators to 20-of-59 (.339) shooting on the night.

Dominican hosts Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Otters shocked San Jose State in a 78-69 exhibition victory and overcame a 12-point deficit to beat Academy of Art University 91-87 in overtime to begin the regular season.
