Carrillo scores on final drive, men's basketball wins at Sonoma State

Myles Carrillo is hugged by his teammates after his basket won the game in the Penguins' 80-78 victory at Sonoma State.
Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Myles Carrillo hit a nothing-but-net floater from the right baseline with 1.6 seconds left in a tied ballgame to lift the Dominican University of California men's basketball team to a 80-78 victory over host Sonoma State in the Ron Logsdon Classic.

Carrillo came off a ball screen set by Connor Haysbert and evaded four defenders to get the shot off. Carrillo, who finished with 10 points, was one of five Penguins (3-0) to reach double digits.

"Connor set that screen and I drove off it looking to attack," said Carrillo. "I was going to get it back to him but had space so I decided to put it up."

Dominique Taplin went 8-of-10 from the free throw line and led the Penguins with 22 points. He added 10 rebounds for a double double. Haysbert went 7-of-7 from the field and finished with 14 points while Devin Golston added 12 points. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 12 points off the bench.

"We've been asking a lot from Tap and he's been delivering for us," said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. "Myles is a senior and to finally get a win here was big for him."

The Penguins opened the game with a 9-0 lead and led by as much as 11 before surrendering the lead at halftime, 35-32.

The game seesawed back and forth in the second half with both teams taking as large as a seven-point lead. Sonoma State (0-1) jumped out to its largest lead a minute into the second half with four consecutive points from Brandon Glanz, who led all players with 24 points.

A Haysbert jumper tied it but another Seawolves run restored the seven-point Penguins deficit. Five straight points from Schwartz-Edmisten and a Carrillo layup evened things yet again. Five points from Taplin and a Matt Hayes three-pointer had Dominican ahead 76-69 with 4:32 to play. A Glanz free throw and tip-in cut the lead to four and Sterling Arterberry got his own rebound to cut the lead to 78-76 with 1:26 to go. Arteberry tied it at 78-78 with 10 seconds to go until Carrillo's successful drive won the game.

"We knew coming in that Sonoma State was going to be a tough team. Coach Fuscaldo has done a great job for years, he's a guy I worked for and respect," said Harris. "They did a great job of making us defend them. What really stands out though is that in the second half our guys knocked down free throws and had less turnovers than the first half."

Dominican faces Cal State East Bay on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in day two of the Ron Logsdon Classic. The Penguins topped the Pioneers 110-106 last Saturday at Dominican.
