Women's soccer falls to first-place California Baptist

In her first game of the season, Jillian Nunes just barely missed scoring on a header.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team battled California Baptist University Lancers on Thursday afternoon but fell 3-0 to the first-place Lancers in Pacific West Conference Play.

CBU's Kelly Jenks, the PacWest's leading goal scorer, troubled Dominican (6-8-2, 3-6-1) all day long. She headed in her first goal of the day off of a cross from the right side from Lindsay Vesling. That gave the Lancers (9-4-0/8-1-0) an early lead just eight minutes into the contest. Vesling connected with Jenks again for a 2-0 CBU lead in the 15th minute.

Kim Allard tried to bend a shot to the far right post but Megan Herring made a diving save to deny the Lancers. She then stopped another Jenks shot on goal minutes later and finished her day with seven, all in the first half.

Herring made way for Raquel "Rocky" Ramos, who despite diving the correct way was unable to stop a penalty kick by Jenks four minutes into the second half. The PK was a result of an inadvertent hand ball by Dominican defender Kendra Corsberg in the box. Jenk's third goal of the day increased her PacWest lead to 12 goals.

The Penguins offense was silenced in the first half without its top two goal scorers, Lauren Gollnick and Mckenna Kimball. Peyton Jones had a tough angle but drilled one off the far post in the second half, then Sara Pimentel followed but had her shot stopped by Rosie Nakata. That set up a corner kick but Jillian Nunes' header was also saved.

It was the first appearance of the season for Nunes, who sustained a preseason knee injury.

The Penguins will need to win their final two games of the season to secure a .500 campaign. In the final home game of the season, Dominican hosts Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, Oct. 26. That is also Senior Day, where Dominican will honor its five seniors — Herring, Kaitlynn Baptista, Kelly Calton, Carrie Freyer, and Kathryn Ripple— in a pregame ceremony.
