Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It was a frustrating night for the Dominican University of California men's basketball team. Visiting Chaminade connected on 11 three-point shots, the most made against the Penguins this season, while Dominican committed a season-high 23 turnovers Monday en route to a 90-63 Pacific West Conference loss, their first defeat at the Conlan Center this season.
The Penguins actually outshot the Silver Swords from the floor (51 to 50 field goal percentage) and outrebounded them (33-29) but they could not defend Chaminade's 3-point shooting and couldn't hold onto the ball or get it to bounce their way. Dominican also had only five assists, a season-low.
Dominique Taplin paced Dominican (8-7/4-3) with 20 points and
Devin Golston chipped in with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Former Valparaiso player De'Andre Haskins, the second leading scorer in the Pacific West Conference, had a game-high 23 points for the Silver Swords (8-8/5-3) who upset Texas 86-73 in the opening round of the EA Classic Maui Invitational on Nov. 19. Texas this past week nearly upset Kansas, the fourth ranked NCAA Div. I team in the country.
“We didn't do anything as far as our trademarks that we have done to have success this season,” said Dominican Head Coach
Booker T. Harris. “I just remember they had a lot of offensive rebounds early on and they would get a three out of it. We need to defend better.”
The 11 made three-pointers by Chaminade was the most by a Dominican opponent since BYU-Hawaii netted 13 on Feb. 15, 2011. The Silver Swords also sank 17-of-20 free throws in the contest.
The Penguins, who fell behind 18-2 the last time they played Chaminade in Honolulu on Jan. 7, started fast on Monday night, hitting their first five shots, all two-pointers, for an 11-7 lead. A Taplin 3-pointer gave Dominican its last lead of the game, 17-14, with 14:10 left in the first half. Taplin was the only Dominican player to make a three-pointer in 11 attempts by the team
After that, the Silver Swords switched into a different gear. Sparked by freshman Kevin Hu, Chaminade proceeded to net five consecutive three-point shots to take control of the game.
Hu didn't miss a shot from the floor in the first half and Chaminade, playing a nearly flawless, connected 51.6 percent of its field goal tries to build a 46-25 advantage at intermission. The Penguins, meanwhile, missed a slew of tip-ins and committed 13 turnovers. They missed their final six shots of the half and made only one of seven 3-point field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
The Silver Swords expanded their lead to 32 in the second half when
Ricky Wofford, who has missed three games with a leg injury, entered a game and sparked Dominican's best playing stretch of the night. He had a basket, two assists and a steal in a three-minute span that produced seven points. He wound up with three steals and three assists.
Dominican returns to the Conlan Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23 to play Hawai'i Pacific University, trying to avenge a loss to the Sea Warriors in Honolulu on Jan. 9. Game time for the rematch is 7:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available at
