Box Score CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team saw first-hand what it takes to be a nationally ranked program on Monday night when it went up against No. 4 ranked Chico State.
The Wildcats (2-0-0) used a 20-shot barrage, seven on goal, and limited the Lady Penguins (0-2-0) to five shots total to take the early non-conference match 3-0. A goal by Scotie Walker in the 22nd minute gave the Wildcats the early 1-0 advantage. A pair of second-half goals at the 48th and 61st minutes, including an unassisted Walker goal, put the score out of reach for Dominican.
“We came up against a really good Chico team tonight. They pressed us really well,” said Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “We were able to see first hand what one of the top teams in the country looks like.”
Kaitlynn Baptista,
Julianna Bratsberg,
Kendra Corsberg,
Megan Hanson, and
Mckenna Kimball all placed shots but Corsberg was the only Lady Penguin to place a shot a goal.
Sophomore
Raquel "Rocky" Ramos, making her second career start in as many games, allowed all three Wildcats goals and made four saves.
“I was really happy with the effort we demonstrated tonight,” said Delano. “It will be nice to have some time off before our next game. We will be able to get some players healthy and work on some things.”
The Lady Penguins will have 11 days to regroup and rest up before taking the field in search of their first victory of the early 2012 campaign. Dominican faces Azusa Pacific University in the team's Pacific West Conference opener. APU is one of four teams joining the PacWest, which has expanded to 14 teams, in 2012. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. following the 1:30 men's match versus the Cougars.
