Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Soccer can be one of the cruelest sports around. The Dominican University of California women's soccer team experienced why on Thursday at Academy of Art University, as Dominican allowed a goal with just 13 seconds remaining and fell 1-0 to the Urban Knights in Pacific West Conference play.
The lone goal of the match came off of Beth Barker's corner kick with time winding down. Amid the commotion of white and black jerseys in front of the goal, the junior's corner kick somehow managed to curve in and roll into the back of the net for Art U (3-6/1-4).
It was a disappointing finish for the Lady Penguins (3-4/2-2), who outshot their opponent 15-12. Dominican had its four shots on goal stopped by Rachael Rempe and had four more shots blocked by the Urban Knight defense.
"I thought we created really good opportunities to score and just weren't clinical enough in front of the net. We worked hard. The determination was there," said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. "Luckily we get a second opportunity to play them in conference and the girls are looking forward to that opportunity."
Sophomore
Jessica Ramirez took three shots, two on goal, for the Lady Penguins. Freshman
Stephanie Owens and senior
Alex Moran recorded the team's other two shots on goal.
Megan Herring recorded four saves that kept the game close. Despite allowing the goal, the junior, who entered the week 14th in the nation in Division II save percentage at .909, improved to .914 after this week's matches.
"We have to bounce back and be mentally tough," said Delano. "I fully believe in the girls and I know that they'll do that."
The Lady Penguins have their chance to bounce back on Thursday, Oct. 4 against Fresno Pacific University, one of four new members in the PacWest. The rare game under the lights is slated for 7:30 p.m. at FPU.
