With five steals, McNally Tops NCAA Division II in Steals

Xander McNally came up with five steals, cementing him atop NCAA Division II in steals.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The 2011–12 Dominican University of California men's basketball season is history. And there was plenty to remember on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gym. The Penguins clung onto a 28-23 halftime lead en route to a 56-50 victory over host Cal Baptist University in the two teams' Pacific West Conference finale. The win was the Penguins' eleventh overall, the most ever in the program's three-year history in NCAA Division II. It was also an historic night for senior Xander McNally, who snatched five steals en route to accumulating the most steals in NCAA Division II for 2011–12.

With the victory the Penguins, picked to finish tenth in the PacWest coaches preseason poll under first year Head Coach Booker T. Harris, finish the season having won eight of their last 11 games and are 10-game winners in conference play, good for fourth place behind Dixie State College, BYU-Hawaii, and Grand Canyon University.

The Lancers built a six-point lead with 8:35 to go in the first half but the Penguins answered with jumpers by Derek Ober and Jammall Clark and a pair of Ober free throws to tie it at 17-17. The Lancers wouldn't lead after that and junior Ricky Wofford hit a runner with three seconds left in the first half to give Dominican a 28-23 halftime lead.

Dominican built the lead to seven on a Mark Lewis layup early in the second half but a three-point play for Luke Evans eventually tied it at 32-32 with 13:36 to go. Dominican took the lead for good at 9:40 on a pair of Jacob Noisat free throws. The Lancers cut the lead to as little as one but Dominican expanded the lead to nine before taking the final decision 56-50.

After allowing the Lancers to shoot .568 in their first meeting, the Penguins held Cal Baptist to just 19-of-56 (.339) on Saturday, well below the Lancer's average of .471. The Penguins made half of their 40 field goal attempts and are 6-0 on the season when holding opponents to 62 or fielder points.

Evans led CBU with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ivan Patterson added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Clark scored 16 points, pulled down six rebounds, and had four blocks without committing a foul. Noisat scored 11 points and pulled down a team-high seven boards. Lewis added nine points and fellow senior Xavier Muldrow had a bucket and a steal as the Riverside native made the start in front of many friends and family.

“I think that's great for those guys who have been in the program to go out that way. The effort that they gave,” said Harris. “They really left it all out there.”

With five steals, McNally finishes his season with an average of exactly four steals per game. That secures him the top spot in the nation in NCAA Division II with 104 steals in 26 games. It also gives him .9 more than the two men tied with 3.1 steals per game in Division I, Delaware State's Jay Threatt and Seton Hall's Fuquan Edwin.

“Xander just has a knack for the ball. He's a special type of player on the defensive end,” added Harris. “It's nice to end the season with a win and you hope that the guys returning can continue to improve.”
