Free Throw Shooting Lifts Penguins over NDNU

Devin Golston led the Penguins in Saturday's win over NDNU.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Relying on balanced scoring and free throw shooting again, the Dominican University of California men's basketball team escaped with a 60-56 home win over Notre Dame de Namur Saturday night at the Conlan Center.

It wasn't textbook and left room for improvement, yet the Penguins remain unbeaten in Pacific West Conference action at 2-0.

“It's a win, but it was different. It's something we have to learn from,” said Dominican Head Coach Booker T. Harris. “We held serve at home and you want to try to get wins on the road.  We stayed close in this game and then we managed to execute down the stretch.”

Devin Golston scored a team-high 13 points and senior Jammall Clark came off the bench to add 10, including a key 3-point play that gave the Penguins (4-3/2-0) a six-point lead, 58-52, with 1:48 to play.

Dominican's Ricky Wofford had nine points and three assists and capped the game's scoring by making both ends of a bonus free throw situation with 15.3 seconds remaining. The Penguins, who lead the PacWest in free throw shooting percentage, connected on 12 of 13 foul shots in the contest.

Freshman Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten, Wofford, and Clark – the top three free throw shooters on Dominican – are now a combined 85-of-105 (.809) in foul shooting this season.

“It's one of those things where you tell the guys they need to get in the gym and work on free throws,” Harris said.

Myles Carrillo and freshman Matt Hayes both contributed seven points to the victory over the Argonauts (1-7/1-1) while Clark and Jacob Noisat led Dominican with seven and six rebounds, respectively.  The Penguins entered the game with five players averaging double figures in scoring.

Golston started fast for the Penguins, netting five of his first six shots. He scored 11 of Dominican's first 16 points.  The Penguins built a 10-point lead, 25-15, but settled for an eight-point cushion at halftime when Carrillo ended the first half with a basket before falling out of bounds.

With Carrillo making all three of his shots, Dominican shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Penguins pushed their lead back up to 10, 33-23, but then they went cold. They missed eight consecutive shots and made only one of 11 as the Argonauts went on a 12-2 run to tie the game.

Hayes ended Dominican's drought with a tie-breaking 3-pointer and the Penguins managed to keep the lead the rest of the game. Clark's 3-point play with 8:23 to go built Dominican's advantage back up to six, 49-43.

The Penguins are off until next Saturday, Dec. 15, when they host Cal State East Bay of Hayward in a non-conference game. Game time in the Conlan Center is 7:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
