Penguins Force Overtime, Fall Short at Sonoma State

Schwartz-Edmisten named to All-Tournament Team

Myles Carrillo's three-pointer sent Dominican into overtime for the second straight night.
Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team played overtime for the second straight night on Saturday but came up short in a 91-87 decision versus host Sonoma State at the 12th Annual Ron Logdson Classic.

The Penguins (2-1) and Seawolves (1-1) traded five-point leads early before Sonoma State closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 35-28 at halftime, then added two more points to start the second half with a basket before Dominican scored again.

Dominican trailed by as much as 14 with just under 10 minutes to go before chipping away late in the second half. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten came alive in the second half and nearly singlehandedly got the Penguins back in the game. After being held scoreless in the first half, the freshman dropped 26 points. With Dominican trailing by 13, he scored 15 consecutive points for the Penguins that cut the lead to four. A Devin Golston layup with half a minute left cut the lead to a bucket before the Seawolves answered with a Jason Walter free throw. With time ticking down, junior Myles Carrillo's off-balance three-pointer in the left corner tied the game for the sixth time at 74-74.

Walter scored a bucket and drew the foul in overtime to help build a six-point Seawolves lead. Dominican cut it back to two on another Schwartz-Edmisten layup with eight seconds but Walter knocked down two more free throws to put it out of touch with three seconds to play.

Schwartz-Edmisten finished his night with a career-high 32 points and a team-high six rebounds. His 21.5 points per game in the classic earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

“We needed guys to step up tonight when we got down and Chris stepped up big time,” said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. “He took advantage of an opportunity and made a huge contribution these past two nights.”

Senior guard Ricky Wofford added 13 points. Junior Connor Haysbert scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Golston added 11 points. Senior Jacob Noisat both pulled down a team-high six boards for the Penguins.

Walter was one of six Sonoma State players in double digits and had a team-high 20 points.

The Penguins face another CCAA opponent on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Seaside.
