Clark Plays Hero in Triple Overtime Victory

Jammall Clark sent the game into overtime not once, but twice in Friday's triple overtime win over San Francisco State.
Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team has half a dozen new faces for 2012–13. It's two games into the season so you'd expect them to still be gelling. The Penguins had plenty of time gel on Friday night in one for the ages, a 115-110 triple overtime victory over San Francisco State University at the 12th Annual Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State.

Dominican (2-0) trailed by nine early. San Francisco State's up-tempo style forced the Penguins out of their element and in turn helped the Gators (0-1) build a 23-14 lead. The Penguins settled down though and carried a 47-39 halftime lead into the locker room.

The Gators knotted the game back at 56-56 in the second half on a William Overton, Jr. jumper with 12:53 remaining on the clock. The lead bounced back and forth and neither team held larger than a five-point lead for the rest or regulation. The Penguins looked to have the game locked up several times in the final minute of regulation but missed free throws allowed the Gators to stay in the game. The Gators' Robbie Herndon missed a three-pointer with four seconds to go but the Penguins couldn't come up with the ball. Instead, it bounced back to Herndon, who didn't miss the second time and beat the buzzer to send it to overtime.

Things started to look bleak for Dominican in overtime after Overton hit another three-pointer en route to a team-high 24 points to give the Gators a four-point lead. Instead, junior guard Myles Carillo kept it close with a three-pointer and freshman guard Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten knocked down two clutch free throws. Down two after the Gators made a pair of free throws, Clark put up a jumper to tie it with just seconds left and sent it to a second overtime.

Clark wasn't done though. With the Penguins trailing by three, the senior upped the ante on the drama. With one second left on the clock, the senior banked in a game-tying three-pointer from the right side to send it to triple overtime tied at 104.

Ironically, the Penguins took care of business in triple overtime where it nearly cost them earlier: at the free throw line. Senior Ricky Wofford, freshman Matt Hayes, senior Jacob Noisat, Carillo, and Schwartz-Edmisten combined for eight three throws with a Schwartz-Edmisten three-pointer tossed in.

“I thought the first one was, then hitting that bank shot — it had to be the biggest shot of my career,” said Clark. “I'm just glad we got it done. Everybody contributed tonight and guys stepped up when they needed to.”

It was a career night for Clark, who finished with a career-high 25 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Juniors Devin Golston and Connor Haysbert each added 20 points apiece and Haysbert recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds. Noisat tallied 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Schwartz-Edmisten added 11 points in the win. Carillo finished with seven points and seven rebounds while Wofford dished out a career-high six assists.

"It wasn't just any one guy tonight," said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. "These guys played with heart and there were a lot of times where we could've dropped our heads. Instead, we kept battling and it paid off in the end."

The Penguins face host Sonoma State on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
