"Big Three" Leads Dominican to Victory in Season-Opener

Senior Jacob Noisat had 15 points in Dominican's season-opening win over Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – What a difference a year makes. Seniors Jammall Clark, Jacob Noisat, and Ricky Wofford teamed for 43 points on 14-of-25 shooting from the floor and 15-of-18 marksmanship from the foul line Saturday night, leading the Dominican University of California's men's basketball team to a season-opening 69-59 non-conference victory over Cal State Stanislaus in the Conlan Center.

Last year, in an 82-68 loss to Warriors in Turlock, that same trio, as juniors, combined to score only 17 points on 7-of-24 shooting.

“I think the seniors remember last year and how we started and definitely that rough stretch at the beginning of the year,” said Head Coach Booker T. Harris, whose team lost 10 of its first 11 games last season – all on the road. “They made a concerted effort tonight to try to get off to a good start, especially with the ability to have a home game.”

The Penguins took control of the game early in the second half on Saturday with a 9-0 run. Junior Devin Golston started it with an offensive rebound basket then Noisat assisted on a Clark jumper and Wofford went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to force Cal State Stanislaus to call timeout. Wofford then fed Connor Haysbert, who scored and was fouled, then Derek Ober converted the missed free throw into a foul shot and a 45-28 lead with 12:55 to play.

Dominican had a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 5:06 to play following two foul shots by Clark, who topped the Penguins with a game-best 16 points. Noisat, who was 4-for-12 and only eight points in 27 minutes last year in Turlock, finished with 15 points in 19 minutes before fouling out. Wofford contributed 12 points and Golston added a game-high 11 rebounds and six points.

Freshman Matt Hayes and Haysbert also had six points for the Penguins off the bench.

“The guys figured it out,” said Harris. “They were able to withstand a little comeback at the end, not as cleanly as we had hoped, but all the important little things we are trying to build on.”

Noisat had 11 points and Clark eight in the first half when, offensively, the Penguins dominated the paint. Of their 34 first-half points, 27 of them were scored inside either as a result of a field goal or free throws. Noisat connected on five of six foul shots in the first half and Dominican made 11 of 13 free throw attempts.

“We wanted to get as many easy baskets as possible early on to free things up for our guys on the outside,” Harris said.

At one point, the Penguins had six offensive rebounds before the Warriors grabbed one.  It was a five-point game, 24-19, when Noisat netted a reverse lay-up. After Wofford sank a pair of free throws, Golston muscled inside for a reverse lay-up and Wofford did the same thing to cap an 8-1 run by the Penguins to build a 12-point lead, 32-20.

Wofford, Noisat and Clark combined for 27 points in the opening 20 minutes and Golston had six rebounds.

The Penguins begin a five-game non-conference game road trip on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. with a contest against San Francisco State in the annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. Dominican plays the host Seawolves on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
