Penguins Fall in Overtime to Cal Baptist

Jacob Noisat had 15 points and 7 rebounds but the Penguins came up short in overtime against Cal Baptist on Saturday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —  If good things come in threes, the Dominican University of California men's basketball team had a great week.
It took overtime to put a damper on it Saturday night in the PacWest Game of the Week.

After defeating Grand Canyon University on Tuesday and Dixie State College in overtime on Thursday, the Penguins were on the verge of a trifecta of upsets in the Conlan Center. They had overcome a 16-point first-half deficit and led California Baptist University after Jacob Noisat scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the four-minute stretch in the second half, taking the Penguins from a five-point deficit to a four-point lead with four minutes to play.

But the Lancers rallied in regulation to tie the game then, holding Dominican without a field goal for more than five minutes, pulled away in overtime for a 72-62 victory and first place in the Pacific West Conference. Cal Baptist (10-1/4-0) won the game with a 13-2 run from regulation into OT to seize a nine-point lead led by Justus Von Wright, who scored a game-high 21 points.

It ruined a terrific comeback by Dominican (3-11/2-1).

“Ideally we really would have liked to hold serve at home,” said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. “Our guys did a good job of putting together two wins and they played like it.”

The second half on Saturday night started ominously for Dominican. With the shot clock running out, Cal Baptist's Connor Isley retrieved a loose ball and launched a 27-foot shot, his first shot of the game, which banked in for a 3-pointer and an 11-point lead.

The Penguins, however, grinded back into the game.  A pair of Jammall Clark baskets was followed by a Connor Haysbert turnaround and long shots by seniors Xavier Muldrow and Mark Lewis. Lewis' 3-pointer cut Cal Baptist's advantage to two, 33-31, with 15:47 left in the contest.

Twice Dominican came within a point off Cal Baptist  – on a Derek Ober fadeaway with 12:12 to go and a Noisat field goal on a feed by Lewis with eight minutes to play – before the Penguins took their first lead of the game on a basket by Clark with 6:30 remaining. A Noisat tip-in capped a 16-7 run that jumped Dominican into a 53-49 lead with 3:59 to go.

Then a crucial call changed the momentum. Xander McNally, who had six steals and scored all 10 of his points in the final eight minutes of regulation and overtime, appeared to take a charge on the Lancers' leading scorer, Luke Evans, which would have been Evan's fifth foul. Instead, McNally was called for a block and Evans turned it into a 3-point play to close Cal Baptist within a point.

Harris refused to blame the officials nor did he use the fact that the Penguins were tired from playing their third game in five nights and second in a row in overtime.

“We came in and got beat tonight,” the Dominican coach said. “That team killed us on the glass. They made shots. They found their shooters at the right time. But we did a good job of fighting uphill all night.”

The Penguins were lacking intensity and energy early in the game. Led by Ivan Patterson, the Lancers were aggressive on the offensive boards and reeled off nine consecutive points about the time Dominican had more turnovers than field goals. Cal Baptist eventually extended its lead to 16, 28-12, on Von Wright's third 3-pointer of the first half with 2:57 to go.

The Penguins, who missed 10 of their first 14 shots, finally made a move late in the half, starting with a 3-pointer by Ober. A Lewis drive and a Noisat dunk on a pass by Muldrow cut the Lancers' lead in half, 28-20, by intermission.

Haysbert, thanks to a pair of assists by Noisat, topped Dominican in scoring in the first half with five points and three rebounds. But the Penguins were outrebounded 16-9 and shot only 35 percent (7-for-20) while Cal Baptist connected on half of its 22 attempts, 4-of-9 from three-point range.

The Penguins, who began this week with a stunning 72-62 upset victory over Grand Canyon, will travel to Phoenix to play the 'Lopes on Wednesday in GCU's new 5,000-seat arena. Game time is 5:30 p.m. Pacific time.
