Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team earned its first road win of the season on Monday night and
Xander McNally had to come home to do it.
The 6-foot-2 senior guard from San Francisco had a game-high seven steals to overtake Adam State's Jamiko Verner for the nation's lead in that category in NCAA Division II as the Penguins defeated Academy of Art University 67-61 in historic Kezar Pavilion. Five Dominican players scored in double figures in the Pacific West Conference contest as the Penguins connected on 56.5 percent of their field goal tries.
Jacob Noisat tallied a team-high 15 points,
Ricky Wofford added 13,
Connor Haysbert had 10, and
Jammall Clark and
Mark Lewis combined to score 20 of their 22 points in the second half for the Penguins (5-15/4-5) as they pulled away from the last-place Urban Knights (3-17/1-9) in the final five minutes.
“Everybody contributed,” said Head Coach
Booker T. Harris. “Everybody has to hold onto the rope and do their part for us to succeed.”
The team was sharing the success of McNally after the game. When told that the senior guard had acquired enough steals to become the country's leader in steals, the Penguins' locker room erupted in cheers.
McNally's last steal of the game led to a Noisat basket that fueled an 8-0 run by Dominican to push them in front 54-45 with 3:19 to play. The Penguins' largest lead was 12, 59-47, following a Wofford hoop with 1:44 to go. McNally also had a game-high seven rebounds and four assists.
“It's a huge win because we have been on the road the majority of the season and the guys know how close they have been to winning a game and a couple of mistakes wound up hurting them,” Harris said. “They learned from those mistakes.”
McNally and the Penguins looked sharp as they built an early lead. McNally had three steals in the first four plus minutes and Wofford seemingly had a hand in every point of an 11-0 run. His baseline spin move for two started the streak then he fed Noisat and Clark for easy baskets then Noisat scored again off a Wofford miss. When
Myles Carrillo nailed a 3-pointer, Dominican had a 14-6 edge and the ball with a chance to extend the lead.
However on their next 10 possessions, the Penguins had five turnovers and only of their shots managed to touch the rim. The Urban Knights responded with a 13-2 run to surge in front 19-16, causing Harris to call timeout and chew out his team.
Dominican rallied, tying the score at 21 on a 3-pointer by Wofford followed by field goals by Noisat and Haysbert then another Haysbert bucket off a pass by Noisat for a four-point lead, 27-23. Noisat and Haysbert combined for 14 points in the first half.
The Penguins attempt to extend their winning streak to three games on Saturday when they travel to Belmont to play Notre Dame de Namur University. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
