Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Ricky Wofford broke out of a mild shooting slump with a team-best 13 points and
Xander McNally, who is second in the country in NCAA Division II in steals, had a season-high seven steals as the Dominican University of California men's basketball team downed Notre Dame de Namur University 67-61 Saturday night in the Pacific West Conference Game of the Week.
McNally now narrowly trails Adam State's Jamiko Verner for the nation's lead with a per game average of 3.76 to 3.75.
“It's my senior year. I just want to get some wins,” said McNally after the Penguins (4-15/3-5) equaled last year's win total with the victory over the Argonauts (7-10/3-6). “I'm not really paying attention to it (the steals race) but it's cool to read it in the box score. I'm just happy we got a win tonight and finished the game out.”?
The Penguins had their biggest lead of the game, 42-29, on a pair of
Jacob Noisat foul shots following a McNally pass with 17:41 left in the contest. Notre Dame de Namur cut that lead down to two, 53-51, with a 7-0 run with 5:42 to go.
But McNally netted a crucial offensive rebound basket for a 58-52 Dominican advantage with 2:17 remaining.
Connor Haysbert and Noisat then followed with key baskets in the final 72 seconds and
Mark Lewis sank two free throws with 11.9 seconds to go to help preserve the victory.
Wofford, who missed 15 of 22 shots in his previous four games bounced back with a 4-of-7 night as Dominican snapped a five-game losing streak. Noisat contributed 12 points, Haysbert added 11 and McNally had seven points, a team-high five rebounds, a game-high three assists and two blocked shots to go along with his seven steals.
In short, a great number of players had a hand in the win.
“That's the identity of our team,” said Head Coach
Booker T. Harris. “We have to play together as a team and we have to play smart together and we have to execute down the stretch. We're at that point that we have to develop and become more disciplined down the stretch.”
The Penguins never trailed after the 12:18 mark of the first half when a no-look pass by
Myles Carrillo to Noisat produced a free throw then two foul shots by
Jammall Clark off a Carrillo feed nudged Dominican in front 13-12. That started a run of nine consecutive points by the Penguins and an 18-4 tear that took Dominican to a 28-16 lead on a McNally fastbreak basket off a pass by
Derek Ober and a block by Clark.
With Wofford making 3-of-5 shots and Haysbert coming off the bench to contribute five points and four rebounds, the Penguins maintained a comfortable 12-point lead until the Argonauts, led by Wesley White, tallied the final five points of the first half. White scored 10 of his game-high 17 points in the last six minutes of the half when Noisat was on the bench in foul trouble.
Wofford led Dominican scorers in the first half with nine points while McNally recorded five steals in the first 20 minutes. The 6-2 senior also had five points and took two charging fouls on defense.
The Penguins' next game will be where the NCAA Div. I champion USF Dons with Bill Russell and K.C. Jones used to play their home games – at the 88-year-old Kezar Pavilion. Dominican will play Academy of Art University of San Francisco in that historic gymnasium on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
