SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – A local rivalry heats up this Saturday, Jan. 28, when Notre Dame de Namur University travels to Dominican University of California in the Pacific West Conference Game of the Week.
Each week during the basketball season, the PacWest will spotlight a game that will be broadcast live over the Internet. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. PST with the men following at 7:30 p.m. PST.
The NDNU women enter the contest 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the PacWest, while the Lady Penguins are 2-15 overall and 1-6 in the league.
Sophomore guard
Kayla Valentine (Chino, Calif./Don Lugo) leads the Dominican offense this season. She is averaging 10.4 points per game and has been a regular member of the PacWest Women's Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll.
NDNU freshman Taylor Dewees (Reno, NV/McQueens) tops the Argos in scoring. The rookie guard is averaging 14.8 points per game this season.
Junior center Trisha Malaspina (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) is averaging 12.0 points per contest, while senior center Emily Vore (San Bernardino, Calif./Redlands) is posting 11.8 points per game.
On the men's side,NDNU enters the contest 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the PacWest, but the Argos are on a roll after knocking off Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii in consecutive games last week. The losses by both teams were their first of the year in conference.
Senior guard Arron Mollet (Campbell, Calif./Del Mar), junior forward/center Wesley White (Los Angeles, Calif./Inglewood) and senior guard Tyler Fricke (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) lead the Argos this season. All three players are averaging in double-figures.
Fricke tops the NDNU squad with his 11.9 points-per-game average, while White is recording 11.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Mollet is contributing 10.4 points per outing.
Junior center
Jacob Noisat (Santa Rosa, Calif/Elsie Allen) is the top point-getter for Dominican. He is averaging 11.1 points per contest this season while also pulling down 6.6 rebounds per game.
Junior forward
Jammall Clark (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley) is averaging 9.1 points per contest this year, while in conference games he has upped his average to 10.6.
The Penguins are 3-15 overall and 2-5 in the PacWest this season but have proven to be dangerous on the court.
Dominican pulled off a pair of huge wins over Grand Canyon University and Dixie State College to start conference play, while four of their five conference losses have come against teams currently tied for first place in the PacWest.
Those setbacks included a 74-73 heartbreaker vs. BYU-Hawaii, a 78-70 defeat vs. Chaminade University, and a 72-62 overtime loss vs. California Baptist University.
