Upson Does It Again in Dominican Victory over Adams State

Reed Upson scored five goals in Sunday's win at Adams State and brought his season total to a team-leading 22 goals.

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Junior attackman Reed Upson led all players with five goals to lead the Dominican University of California men's lacrosse team to a 13-6 victory over Adams State College in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association play on Sunday afternoon.

Dominican (4-6/4-1) came out firing and took 14 shots in the first quarter. Upson scored a pair of goals by in the first quarter and redshirt freshman middie Dalton Copeland and sophomore middie Jim Little each added unassisted goals that built a 4-0 first-quarter lead.

The Penguins extended the lead to 7-0 midway through the second quarter and held a comfortable 9-2 lead at halftime. Dominican held on for the win by the initial seven-goal margin.

Each team won 12 faceoffs throughout the game. Junior middie and captain Matt Polizzi was successful in 10 of his 15 faceoffs.

Peter Santamaria came off the bench to net back-to-back goals for the Grizzlies in the third quarter and led Adams State (0-6/0-5) in scoring with his two goals.

Upson had a pair of assists to go with his five goals, which put him at a team-high 22 on the season. Redshirt freshman Brock Bealll, Copeland, and senior middie Emmett Faricy all scored twice. Faricy dished out two assists and Beall had one assist. Little scored once and dished out a pair of assists. Polizzi added a goal in the victory. Sophomore attackman Cam Evangelho also added an assist to the effort.

“We battled hard for groundballs, displayed poise in the clearing game, shared the ball on offense, got a lot of good looks at the cage, and when things didn't go our way, rode well and played good, settled defense,” said Dominican Head Coach Ned Webster. “We're excited to carry this effort into next weekend's game.”

Dominican heads to first-place Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday, April 9. The Argonauts stand at 4-7 overall and are only team still undefeated in WILA play at 4-0. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Belmont.
