BOX SCORE
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's lacrosse team shook off a slow start on Monday afternoon but was never quite able to catch up to No. 11 nationally-ranked Adelphi University and fell by the final of 17-10.
The Panthers (2-1) built a 4-0 first quarter lead that would serve them the rest of the game. Sophomore middie
Jim Little scored the first of his three goals to begin the second quarter but the Penguins (1-4) were still outscored 3-2 in the quarter and were sent into halftime trailing 7-2. The third quarter saw a flurry of scoring from both teams. Junior attackman
Reed Upson found redshirt freshman middie
Dalton Copeland for a goal to take advantage of a man-up situation. The Penguins refused to call it quits and closed the third period with freshman defender
Mason Mooney's first career goal despite being a man down. Copeland connected with Upson early in the fourth quarter to pull Dominican to 14-7 and junior defender
Ben Wang connected with senior
Emmett Faricy to pull the Penguins to within six but that's as close as they would come.
"I admired the way our guys battled today against a very solid team," said Dominican Head Coach Ned Webster. "Adelphi shot the ball extremely well, and we simply didn't. Our sticks need to sharpen up and our faceoff play needs to tighten up if we're going to beat top ten teams. I'm looking forward to playing this team again."
Dominican played aggressively and scooped up 56 groundballs compared to Adelphi's 44.
Middie Shane Wynn and Kieran Riegel both had four goals and an assist for the Panthers.
In addition to his three goals, Little recorded three assists to finish the day with six points. Faricy and Upson both tallied a pair of goals. Copeland, Mooney, and redshirt freshman middie
Brock Beall had a goal apiece. Beall, Copeland, Upson, Wang, and redshirt middie
Robbie Sautter all had one assist apiece.
Sophomore
Ryan Williams received the start in goal for Dominican and was charged with the loss. He allowed 14 goals and made 14 saves. Freshman
Sean Donohue played the final quarter and allowed three goals and made three saves.
The Penguins return to the field on Friday, March 18 when Rollins Collins comes calling. Faceoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
