Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Jacob Noisat had a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds and led six Penguins players in double figures as
Booker T. Harris recorded his first career victory as Dominican University of California's head men's basketball coach in a 92-80 win over Holy Names University on Saturday night in the Conlan Center.
Ten players scored for the Penguins (1-7) as they produced a season-high point total, 28 points more than their season's average.
“It's hard to say how I feel. You dream about it and you shoot for that goal and it's something you look forward to,” said Harris, who came to Dominican from Metro State in Denver. “Right now it's a nice thing and you enjoy it for the night but we get back to the grind tomorrow.”
Myles Carrillo added 13 points for the Penguins,
Mark Lewis had 12 points and a game-high four steals,
Xander McNally contributed 11 points, and
Connor Haysbert had 10 points along with teammate
Jammall Clark, who also had eight rebounds. Dominican shot 62 percent from the floor, 67 percent in the second half when it scored 49 points against the Hawks (5-6). The Penguins won the game inside, outscoring Holy Names 58-30 in the paint.
“We shared the ball,” said Harris, whose team had 17 assists on 38 field goals in the non-league game. “I had been getting on them for passing up good shots for great shots. The energy was great.”
David Scott, a 6-foot-4 senior for Holy Names who came into the game as the eighth leading scorer in the nation in NAIA Division II, netted a game-high 21 points, his season's average.
After Scott opened the game with a 3-pointer, the Penguins scored the next eight points and never relinquished the lead. Noisat, who made 8-of-11 shots in the game, capped that run with a coast-to-coast play.
Dominican extended its lead to 11 points after Lewis, a senior co-captain, came off the bench with some instant offense. In less than two minutes, Lewis had 10 points and three steals and the Penguins' pushed their advantage to 23-12.
A Noisat offensive rebound bucket gave Dominican a 12-point lead, 39-27, causing the Hawks to call timeout with 3:32 left in the half. Holy Names launched a comeback, cutting Dominican's lead to four, but senior
Xavier Muldrow beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to give the Penguins a 43-35 cushion at intermission. Muldrow was one of 11 Dominican players to play in the first half.
Scott hit his first three shots of the second to knife Dominican's lead to five, but McNally sparked a 9-0 run by the Penguins to build it back to 14, 55-41, with 14:23 to play. McNally had two assists and a steal that he converted into a three-point play in that stretch.
Dominican's biggest lead was 15 thanks to
Ricky Wofford, who had eight points off the bench, all in the second half, on 4-of-5 shooting. He assisted on a Clark 3-point play then scored himself for a 79-64 advantage with a little more than four minutes to play.
This delighted a Conlan Center crowd of close to 500 that was watching the Penguins' men's basketball team for the first time after it played its first seven games of the season away from "The Igloo."
“It was nice to finally get off the road and back here at home,” Harris said.
The Penguins go back on the road again on Dec. 12-13 for a two-day, two-game road trip to Central Washington University then Seattle Pacific. Central Washington is the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion and Seattle Pacific, which beat NCAA Division I Arizona in an exhibition game in October, won six of its first seven games to rank 19th in the country in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Div. II poll.
