Box Score ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team was on the unfortunate end of another close game on Sunday evening, falling 78-73 to UC San Diego in the final game of Disney's West Coast Classic Tip-Off.
The Penguins (0-3) had an early two-point lead with 12:42 in the first half but trailed by as much as 15 and went into the locker room down 10 at halftime.
Dominican trimmed the deficit to a bucket with 16:59 to go on a
Myles Carrillo three pointer and the Tritons (2-1) immediately called a timeout. The Penguins got a defensive stop and Carrillo tied it the next time down with a layup. Christian Hatch pushed the lead to four with 14:18 to play on a made basket and free throw. The Tritons extended the lead back to 15, its largest of the night, with 4:20 to play on a pair of Matt Bailey free throws.
The Penguins didn't give up in the final final stretch and made it interesting, though. Dominican used a 14-4 run, capped by six straight points from
Mark Lewis, to cut the lead to 66-63 with 1:25 to go. UCSD again extended the lead to six but the Penguins cut it right back to three and stayed close. With time running out, Dominican was forced to foul and was never able to pull even.
Justin Brue and Hatch led the Tritons with 16 points apiece. Tyler McGrath added 13 and Mike Meza added 11 points off the bench. Hatch was named MVP of the tournament as the Tritons earned the Tournament Championship for the second straight season.
Dominican was led by Carrillo's season-high 18 points.
Jammall Clark scored 16 points off the bench and Lewis finished his night with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Ryan McIntosh added 14 points and was a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line.
The Penguins now return home to the Bay Area and will travel to Hayward to face Cal State East Bay on Friday, November 11. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
