Box Score ANAHEIM, Calif. — The 2011–12 Dominican University of California men's basketball team debuted under first-year Head Coach
Booker T. Harris with a 74-61 loss to Western Washington University on Friday night in Disney's Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The Penguins (0-1) looked sharp in the first half. Despite a 7-0 Vikings (1-0) run that gave WWU the lead 14-13, Dominican kept it close with a
Ryan McIntosh three-pointer, followed by a feed from
Mark Lewis to
Jacob Noisat, who dunked in his first two points as a Penguin.
Connor Haysbert put Dominican back in front 28-26 with a jumper but the Vikings took a 33-32 lead into halftime on the front side of two Dane Thorpe free throws.
McIntosh immediately put the Penguins back in front with a layup to begin the second half and the lead exchanged hands before Dominican had three straight missed shots. The Vikings capitalized and built their lead to six. Dominican cut the lead to two on a
Myles Carrillo bucket and free throw but that's as close as the Penguins would get. Over the next six minutes, the Vikings went on a 19-4 run that blew the game open.
Dominican committed 24 turnovers compared to just 10 by WWU. Those Penguin turnovers directly led to 20 Vikings points. The Penguins outshot their opponent, going .479 in the game compared to WWU's .452., and had more assists (13 to 9).
"It's one of those things where you have to learn fast because we play again tomorrow," said Harris. "We were down seven points with seven minutes to go and we didn't take care of the little things."
WWU was led by starters Rory Blanche and John Allen, who each had 14 points apiece. Blanche led all players with nine rebounds.
Dominican's McIntosh led all players with 15 points and added a team-high six rebounds. Haysbert added nine points in the loss. Senior co-captain
Mark Lewis scored eight points and sophomore guard
Myles Carrillo finished with seven points and four assists.
Dominican faces Chestnut Hill University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, day two of Disney's Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic.
