Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team lost to Sonoma State 76-63 on Friday in the first game of the Notre Dame de Namur Invite and lost a key player in the process.
Xander McNally got the Penguins (0-6) on the board first and Dominican took an early 7-1. After a 50-minute injury delay, Dominican took its largest lead with seven but Sonoma State (2-1) rallied with seven straight points of their own to tie it up at the 12:23 mark. From there, the Seawolves grew the lead to as large as 10 and by halftime the Penguins found themselves trailing 39-31.
Back-to-back layups by
Jacob Noisat and
Mark Lewis cut the Sonoma State lead to five with 8:12 to play but the Seawolves couldn't miss and answered with 13 straight points to put the game out of reach.
The Penguins launched 22 more shots than their opponent with 65 but connected on three less than the Seawolves, who shot an amazing 28-of-43 (.651) for the game.
Derek Ober led Dominican with 12 points.
Connor Haysbert, McNally, and Noisat all added 10 points apiece in the loss. Noisat led all players with eight rebounds.
Myles Carrillo had seven steals and McNally tallied six steals.
Sonoma State was led by Jason Walter's game-high 20 points. Additionally, three starters reached double digits for the Seawolves.
With 14:07 left in the first half,
Ryan McIntosh suffered an apparent season-ending wrist injury while contesting a shot. Prior to the injury, the 6-foot-4 guard from Puyallup, Wash. had appeared in all five of the Penguins' contests and started in four. He was averaging 10 points per game and was shooting .450 from the field, including 10-of-16 (.625) from behind three-point land. He was named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for games played Nov. 4–13.
The Penguins return to action on Saturday, November 26 when they take on Northwest Nazarene University in the second and final day of the Notre Dame de Namur Classic. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. in Belmont.
