Slow Start Dooms Penguins at Cal State East Bay

Mark Lewis led Dominican with 14 points in Friday night's loss at Cal State East Bay.
Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — Too many turnovers and too much Mark Samuels were too difficult for the Dominican University of California men's basketball to overcome on Friday night in an 88-68 defeat to Cal State East Bay.

Senior co-captain Mark Lewis paced the Penguins with 14 points while teammate Jammall Clark had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Dominican (0-4).

Samuels, a 6-foot junior guard, netted a game-best 29 points for the Pioneers in their season-opening contest, but the turnover-plagued Penguins helped the host team launch 16 more shots in the non-conference encounter.

“When you turn it over an average of 18 times (in the Penguins' first three games) then you turn it over 24 times, something has to be addressed,” said Dominican coach Booker T. Harris. “I have to go back and evaluate and get these guys better.”

The Penguins fell behind early and never recovered. Samuels, who scored 30 points in a three-point exhibition loss at the University of Pacific last week, tallied eight straight CSUEB points at one point. With six minutes left in the first half, he already had 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

Offensively, the Penguins' problems were hanging onto the basketball, not shooting it. Trailing 44-25, Dominican was actually outrebounding the Pioneers 17-12 yet the Penguins had 17 turnovers to only four by CSUEB.

Sophomore Connor Haysbert had seven of his 11 points in the first half, coming off the bench. That's when Ryan McIntosh scored all seven of his points. Teammate Jacob Noisat had five of his seven points and five of his seven rebounds in the first half.

Defensively, the Penguins had the misfortune of playing the Pioneers on a night when they didn't miss many shots. Cal State East Bay was shooting more than 50 percent from the field for the game midway through the second half when the Pioneers led 72-48.

“We'll get right back at it,” Harris said.

The Penguins are off until November 19 when they travel to play Western Washington for the second time this month. Dominican lost to WWU 74-61 last Friday in the opening game of Disney's Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim.
