Box Score ARCATA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team couldn't convert early scoring opportunities and lost late on Tuesday, dropping a 1-0 non-conference game on the road to Humboldt State.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Herring had seven saves for the Lady Penguins (3-10-1) but Liz Christensen's goal at the 69:53 mark was the difference for the Lumberjacks (3-11-2).
“It was a very even game. It could have gone either way,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “We battled today for the full 90 minutes. Even though we gave away a goal – which was a preventable one – we battled the whole time and there have been some moments where we haven't been able to do that consistently.”
The Lady Penguins came out fast and threatened to score. Less than eight minutes into the contest a Jullian Nunes' shot hit the post. Dominican finished the first half strong as well.
Katie Brown,
Carrie Freyer, and
Kaitlynn Baptista fired the final three shots of the half at the Lumberjacks' net.
Baptista had three shots on goal in the game. Teammates
Tori Selesia,
Lexi Humphry,
Michelle Bella, and Freyer had the others for Dominican.
Delano also commended senior co-captain and midfielder
Shayna Elkins for her all-out effort. But the Dominican coach knows his team needs to produce more scoring chances.
“The one issue that we have in manufacturing goals is trying to get more numbers in the box and I thought we did that today,” said Delano. “But we weren't efficient in our runs in putting ourselves in dangerous goal-scoring positions and that's something we'll address.”
The Lady Penguins host BYU-Hawaii, the defending Pacific West Conference champion, on Friday, October 28 in a Dominican “Spirit Week” contest at Forest Meadows Field. Game time is 12:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at
